I’ve always used my blog as platform to share useful information with others, get feedback from comments that were posted and mails I’ve received. I’ve slowly built it up step by step from the 20th of March 2005 with a pretty rudimentary and early version of WordPress at that time. Due to my interest and work within the open-source area around Linux and the GNOME Desktop at that time, I had pretty much content I loved to share with other people interested in those topics.

By the time passing, the content of my blog also changed. I slowly moved away from Linux as an desktop operating system, towards using Mac OS X and its tools. Meanwhile, I took my own know-how about the Linux operating system on a higher level by starting to use it heavily as server-side operating system. My blog posts became from “Hey, check out this desktop notifications daemon I’ve written! There wasn’t anything like that on the GNOME desktop, now there is!” and “Oh look, this would be a great idea for a Sync-Application on the GNOME Desktop” to information sources for setting up a Linux instance on Amazon’s EC2 service, stripping down Ubuntu Servers to several hundreds Megabytes and setting up a Debian server that provides SSL-secured WebDAV with LDAP as authentication back-end. So instead of sharing useful information for Linux desktop users, I transited to share information about my experiences and creations on the Mac.

Through the years, my blog grew bigger and bigger, with more and more content. I was pretty happy with how it worked out, except of one part: The design. “devilx.net” never really had an unique identity shaped by its own design. I switched the look & feel several times, using freely available WordPress themes with smaller changes hacked by myself. For the pure sake of information sharing it worked out, but due to that my blog never really got its “own face”. I wanted to change this fact for like ever already, unfortunately I never really had the time and – what’s even more important – the muse for doing so. Now, after all those years – and especially after the last few months, in which the majority of returning visitors probably thought of my blog being another victim by the Twitter, Facebook and other Web 2.0 platforms’ distraction-hype – I decided to take the time, search for at least some creative inspiration and replace my yet-another-downloaded-WordPress-theme with something made with my own hands, giving my blog its own shape and style.

My abilities in the matter of creativity and design clearly aren’t the best, but I thought like… “Man, 2011 is coming, you just have to!”. So I turned on Pixelmator in full-screen mode and started drawing. I kinda had like dozens of concepts, drafts and even several PXM-to-XHTML implementations, but none really was something I’d like to have running on the internet, with my name on it. Meanwhile, I was testing Posterous, one of those Web 2.0-“we can streamline your blog with your Twitter account, your Facebook profile and the two-hundred-forty-nine other platforms you might be using”-services, which should have been the second update for today actually. I really liked it and I liked their theme-templating. I gave it a first shot, by exporting my WordPress’ database and importing it into Posterous.

The result unfortunately was… well… pure fail. It stopped at twenty-one out of several hundreds and didn’t advance for a couple of hours. After contacting the Posterous support, I got the advice to first clean up my WordPress’ spam-queue, re-export the database and try it again. So I did and finally the import ran through pretty quick. Curiously I checked out how the imported Posterous site looked, since I didn’t thought of for example comments being also imported. For my surprise, they were. Unfortunately, the import was incomplete. Some why three-fourth of my WordPress blog posts were missing. Again, I contacted the support which answered after two days, telling me that they’re on the problem and can’t provide me any help yet.

While I was waiting for a solution to my problem, I already translated one of my drafts into Posterous’ templating format – but soon I kind of realized, that Posterous isn’t pretty much what I needed. It works for many people and it surely is a very cool service, free of charge! But for me, as someone that’s pretty much into technology it’s just way too inflexible and closed. For example, I have found a way to import my WordPress’ data, but none to export the Posterous data. I guess, hacking through the API is probably the only way to do so. Also, Posterous’ content delivery isn’t performing really well, at least when requested from Germany. I built in some Base64-encoded images and a @font-face (because Posterous does not provide you any space for actually uploading pictures, which is why you would need to pay for some webspace or at least an Amazon S3 account anyway) and as soon as they were live, the page’s loading-speed decreased to a quite ugly value. Also I was unsatisfied with the template-editor/-previewer Posterous provides – it is really slow and for me (as web developer et al.) a pure pain to use.

Please don’t get me wrong – as I’ve said before, Posterous (as well as Tumblr and all those other services) really is something great, especially when you’re into writing quick shouts most of the time. But for me, as a person who likes the ability to extend the platform for sharing information to fit my (growing) needs, Posterous and others simply are too limited.

However, after realizing that I won’t give up my WordPress from one day to another (and by that actually had no second update to share with you today while I’m still sticking with the plural “updates” in this article’s first few lines), I’ve re-started concept-creation, drafting, mocking and all that stuff professional designers probably do the whole day. In the end, I came up with a pretty neat design that fits my taste pretty good and isn’t too exaggerated or improper to be used on a blog: It’s the design you’ve been staring at for the last, well, I would say fifteen minutes, if I haven’t already talked you into sleep.

“Okay, so your blog isn’t dead yet, huh?” – Yepp, that’s right (and that is the second update, hah!). I’m really looking forward to the next years of blogging, sharing and communicating with others. In the past several years digital life changed a lot and blogs became more and more irrelevant thanks to the possibility of fast and instant exchange with each other through Twitter for example. Unfortunately people sometimes tend to forget, that all those tweets would be nothing without the information behind them, that contains more than only 140 characters.

Having said this, I wish everyone a nice evening (CET UTC+1) and furthermore a great year in 2011. Have fun!

However, I could philosophize even more about the pros and cons of this themeable-web-interface-for-YQL but I’m actually not that much into it to do so. The reason for registering was mainly for the hype’s sake and besides, I actually planned to reserve my everywhere used nickname “devilx” – unfortunately it was already taken by an as-it-seems porn addicted guy.
If this guy should coincidentally follow my blog and read this: I would be very thankful, if you could pass me that subdomain name, so I can make use of it for more than just an empty page named “Default” and following porn. Thank you!

So, what’s new in 0.3? Well, just about everything. I’ve renamed the bundle (at least its metadata), since webOS is not just limited to the Pre and I’ve modified the shortcuts of existing features to fit TextMate’s styling guidelines a bit better. I’ve also created some snippets which can be used for faster code-writing now and in addition to that, I’ve implemented a very own language for the bundle, which can’t be found in the document type picker named as “Mojo”. “Yeah baby!”, as Austin would say now. Actually, yet it’s just a copy & paste of the JavaScript-language implementation in TextMate, but I’m planning to extend it to fit the Mojo-framework even better.

The TextMate bundle is now also available on GitHub, for everyone who can’t wait for me packaging the releases and releasing them here. If you have any ideas for improvement, feel free to contact me by mail or just leave some lines here on my blog.

First of all, the App Store is great. From its theory to its practice, everything is implemented just the way it has to be. Sure, sometimes it’s a little slow and not that responsible as one would expect, but altogether the browsing experience is really great. Why? Because it has to be. Nobody likes to spend money somewhere he doesn’t enjoy browsing for things – regardless whether we’re talking about the #real-life or in virtual. It’s just fun to look through the Apps, find new ones, share them with your friends and of course buy them. And it’s so easy as well. One click, that’s all! Isn’t that just great?

Oh well, yeah, it would be – if. If Apple would have kept the essential concept of their App Store the way they actually planned and intended it to. I mean, let’s think back, to the time before the Apple App Store was launched (what’s only little over a year ago) – what was the general appearance of existing application stores (of e.g. Nokia or for the Windows Mobile Platform)? Exactly. Ugly, slow, confusing, a lot of useless tra…ehrrr… stuff. And then came Apple – BAM! Brand new App Store for mobile applications. Everything was clean, everything was very well working and simple for the end-user to access. Then ago, the App Store provided a few essential and yet well known applications by third-parties. Great apps, with great functionality that even looked amazingly cool.

But then, after a while, it seems like the whole BAM just BAM-MED even more. And more. And more. Of course, Apple was lucky about this fact – more Apps for sale, more cut-offs for themselves. Why not? And do you know what’s the best? Big numbers. What? Yeah! Just as I said it. Big numbers. From the moment on, from which Apple started literally raping the potential of the App store within every Keynote they presented people could see all those big numbers. Thousands of of Apps. Millions of downloads. Et cetera.

But did this really improve the Store? I’m looking around at this very same moment within the App Store and have to say: No. It didn’t. All it improved was Apple’s pockets and the big numbers on their Keynote presentations. I stumble through the App Store and see hundreds and hundreds of Apps, one more useless than the other – Bikini Babes, Gym Babes, Simple To-Do and of course a huge amount of games. Yeah, games. I’m not saying, that games are “useless” in that way. Sometimes, when waiting for the Bus or for your Girl getting changed you appreciate those little time-consumptions. But come on? I mean, spending more than $2 for a game that won’t last any longer than one hour to be played, thanks to Apple’s gorgeous batteries? Who should play those games? Shall I constantly keep my iPhone attached to the power-cord, so I can play two hours of Need For Speed? Isn’t the whole game stuff, that Apple’s trying to sell as “PSP/NintendoDS Killer” just plain dumb and totally impracticable? I’m not saying, that games on mobile phones are no fun in general, but are you re-charging your iPhone every three hours, just to be able to play some games? I mean, I still don’t understand what market Apple really tries to reach with that. My impression is, that people indeed spend money on games like NFS or Sims 3, but only to be able to show-off at parties or other occasions. I don’t believe anybody really playing (and by playing I mean the very same behavior you hear from 15-years old, Norwegian guys with a World of Warcraft account!) the games on the iPhone. At least not till their end. Also I believe, that 70% of the people buying games use in iPod Touch instead, in addition to their iPhone.

Eh, however. Back to the topic. So, the Apple App Store started providing more and more sh… apps, over the past year. Some, useless ones and also some totally useless ones. Of course, in between of all those crap, you’ll sometimes find a pearl, like for example Shazam, Daylite Touch, Things, LittleSnapper, Colloquy, eBay, Ego, Wallet, Squirrel, Shopper, Deliveries, Weightbot, iStat, Beats, Last.fm, RadAlert and many many more. Apps that really have a use and pay-back for the price you spent on them. Unfortunately, those apps aren’t the majority anymore – and it seems to become worse by each day passing by. So what to do?

Of course Apple could stop selling all those other crappy apps. Just reject when developers submit them – and instead include apps that would be worth including. *cough*GoogleVoice*cough* But to be honest, by that, Apple would shoot into their own feet. Why stop selling crappy apps, when there are enough users to buy them? Why rejecting the cut-off, even if it’s just some pennies per app?

So let’s see, what could be Plan B? Uh yeah. Plan B. Sounds always good. How about.. err.. an “Exclusive App Store”? An App Store exclusively for high-rated and (therefor) pricy apps. Yeah, that sounds good, doesn’t it? But wait… who decides what’s “exclusive”? The developers? The users? Or maybe the price? I don’t know how you think, but I’d probably go with the third option. As long as the price is high enough, I don’t believe Apple caring about the actual application’s quality – not esthetically nor functionally. So, what sense would an exclusive App Store have then? Well, I guess no more than just gather more and more money.

I’m really happy that at least there are Blogs and Sites on the web, which take the enormous job of searching through the App Store, filtering the whole crap away and bringing you the best and most beautiful applications available for your iPhone. Without them, I guess I’d have a hard time to fine *anything* that would fit my needs within the actual App Store – and maybe just switch to Android.

So far.

The biggest news is only visible if you pinged devilx.net before and re-ping it now: You would see, that its IP has changed. After my web-space’s performance at Strato got more and more terrible (download rates of 6kb/s), I decided to move my blog to a provider I’m more familiar with, where I pay less for even more: HostEurope.

The actual transition was pretty much squabbling, since the WordPress installation I was running at Strato was some never-changed-just-upgraded-from-1.x installation, where WordPress used a latin1-database. This caused me some trouble when moving to the new host, but I solved it by writing myself a conversion script that removes all “random” characters from the database-dumps and converted the databases to UTF-8. As front-end, I’m now running the latest WordPress-release available.

After I’ve finished the transition I looked at the Prologue-theme I was using and thought that an exchange (YES WE CAN!) could bring some freshness to my journal. Though, I had to keep in mind the work I hacked into my Prologue-theme (like for example the iPhone detection bundled with the theme-changer, and so on), since I didn’t want to lose these things. I’ve found a nice theme, downloaded and installed it and started extending it. The main problem with my actual Hemingway-theme is, that it doesn’t make use of standard WordPress widgets. Instead it uses its own widget-concept, what pretty much made me write every widget I wanted to use on my journal from scratch – and so I did. For some, I took existing WordPress widgets and transformed them to work with my current Hemingway, others, I hacked in from ground up. I will still need to extend the widgets a bit more, for example to make use of some caching, so that the widgets won’t reload each tweet or gallery picture every time a user opens a new link on my journal. Correction: Done. I’ve now implemented caching, even before going live, just to avoid data-transfer/connection troubles.

Altogether I hope that the browsing experience will be more enjoyable now. At the moment, the site’s speed seems to be pretty good, but I’ll keep an eye on it when the heavy usage starts. Feel free to write me some feedback regarding the site’s new layout and the site’s speed.

I actually had pretty much work to do at the office and besides in private I also had to do stuff like learning for a certificate I’ve been doing for quite a long time, working on some private projects and of course not forgetting my princess. Also, due to the long working-days over the week I didn’t feel like sitting down in the evening and trying to hack something into my Blog, just to have written. At the weekend I’ve been away most of the time, as you could read on my Twitter profile and see within my gallery, heh.

Right now it’s around quarter past two in the morning and I’ve mostly finished everything I wanted to do for “today” – “today” as in saturday. The past hour I’ve been spending on writing e-mails to the developers of Apps like TextMate, Pixelmator, Wallet and Viscosity, to ask about their licensing models. I’m actually planning to use the licenses I bought for my desktop also on another machine, but before I wanted to be sure that I’m allowed to. By now I’ve already received the answers from the TextMate-, the Pixelmator- and the Wallet-guys, which were all the same: It’s no problem. It’s pretty cool that these Apps use a model where the license is bound to a person and not to a machine or a machine+person.

Aside from the IT stuff, my car said Hello again. Last week I had to do a day home-office, since I had to bring in my CRX to the car-shop. After I got it back, it had its oil and its brake fluid changed, new summer-tires put on and some news regarding my rear suspension: It’s fscked. Now I’m wondering whether to get replacement parts for the lowered suspension I’ve built in… or…. just get a K&W adjustable suspension. The second choice would cost me €799 + working hours. However, I’ll think some more about that.

Another thing I thought about was getting an Apple TV, since Apple finally managed it to provide movies in the german iTunes Store. The only two reasons that keep me from doing that are first of all the price (a.k.a “Apple ‘cool’ Tax”), which is way over the device’s value (especially when regarding the american-$-price for comparison), and as second the hope that Apple might introduce new hardware for the Apple TV soon. I mean, they haven’t had a hardware upgrade for a long time now. Eh.

I guess that’s all for now.

I think, that I should maybe upgrade the package some time or maybe totally change the webspace provider. Some time ago, I registered some domains via Hosteurope, I could take a look whether they can provide me more performant webspace for a blog. I mean, come on, it’s a WordPress with nearly no traffic. It can’t be that it’s that slow. *grml*

Spam-Chart

So, I was just wondering how my Akismet’s well-being is, since the 13th of November, the day I’ve set it up on my blog. I browsed its stats and took a look over the spam statistics and I really have to say, that it’s pretty good working out for me. I didn’t think of receiving that much spam, but as it seems I’m getting monthly over one hundred comments which are just spam. I browsed to the spam queue and it’s true: All comments blocked by Akismet are spam-comments. It’s really cool, since the plugin integrates very nice into WordPress and there is no patching needed when upgrading to another version or changing the blog’s theme (one of my favorite hobbies).

Though, I’m wondering how that many spammers got attracted to my tiny, winey blog and what they actually hoping for, when spamming my posts with crappy comments? As it seems, 76% of the comments I receive are spam and only 24% are Ham. Hm… well. Whatever.

Besides of the missing time, I did quite some clubbing and out-going together with my lovely girl and with buddies of mine. Last weekend we’ve been ice-skating, the weekend before we went clubbing, and so on. Tomorrow I’m planning to visit the Rocker33 in STR – LTJ Bukem and Mc Conrad will be in the house, spinning the vinyls.

What else is new… oh yeah, tomorrow and next monday will be my last days at work until holidays start. Besides, the weather here is really crazy… yesterday a snowstorm started and a total chaos came up on the streets of Filderstadt. The busses couldn’t reach some of their stops anymore, the traffic was actually standing and nobody could really move. Funny stuff, luckily that I have been home until it got really crappy.

And, oh yeah, while talking about new: I just upgraded to WordPress 2.7 and have to say that I’m shockingly amazed by the new administrative-interface design. In my opinion, it looks pretty cool. Of course, it’s full bloated AJAX, but I really like it. Especially since my Safari displays is very clean and tidy.

Oh well, I guess, that’s enough slipslop for today, heh.

The first Snow, this morning.

When I got this morning, I’ve been pretty shocked when my precious girl happily screamed “SNOW!!!” through the apartment. First I actually did not believe her and though she would just want to fool me, but after taking a look out of the window (yepp, I don’t do that right after I wake up, …) I saw it myself: This morning the first snow for this year just fell and accordingly to that the traffic was chaotic and dangerous. I’ve seen three accidents on the highway while driving slowly to work and really had to pay attention to not involve myself into a fourth one. I guess I really need to buy snow-tires this year.

I was really surprised of the snow, especially with the past few years in mind. In this region of Germany we didn’t had snow until the middle of Januar in the last two years, so I assumed that it’ll be the same this year – which is why I didn’t organize myself some snow-tires till yet. I’m really afraid of tomorrow being even snowier than today.

Anyway, what else happened in the last few days/weeks(/months?). I haven’t been blogging anymore, since I’ve ordered an upgrade of my webspace at Strato (on the 10th of October) and they told me to backup everything I have uploaded on my account. This request made me think “Hm, let’s not write anything anymore, let’s not change content, in a few they the upgrade will be done and I’ll be able to blog again.“… WRONG!* They didn’t seem to be doing anything till now. And besides, they didn’t even answered the mails I wrote, in which I asked for some status info about the upgrade. I’m kinda disappointed of the Strato support on this, because actually I had the support center as a pretty good and reliable contact point in mind. Eh, I’ll just wait and see what happens. At least they didn’t charge me for anything – yet.

What else is new… well. Today my salary arrived, so I ordered a new iPod Touch. But I think this is not worth mentioning, since everyone has an iPod Touch today. Lately I’ve seen the Apple Keynote for October and I really fell in love with these new aluminum (A-LU-MI-NI-UM, dear AE-speakers, not “aluminum” ) MacBooks Apple presented. I think it would be a great gadget for the Norway trip mpain and I’m planning for next year.

However, so far. I think I’ll start up blogging again, until I’ll receive at least some info from Strato.

Now, I’m planning to do some more work on this theme and add some own modifications to it, to make it look even sexier. I have something with flat shapes in mind… but you’ll see when it’s done.
