A few time ago I’ve searched for services, that provides me a pay-per-click selection of well-known magazines for reading them digitally and by that save paper/trees/money. Yet, I’ve found out Zinio to be one of the better known sites providing exactly such a service, so I’ve just registered an account and already subscribed to some free-of-charge issue of a magazine. The registration process was pretty simple, nothing special. After I subscribed to the issue, I receive a mail though, which was written in I guess spanish. I’ve checked my profile and saw that I had chosen Germany as country and English as language. Hm, very strange.

Anyway, after that, I wanted to take a look at the Reader Zinio provides for the Mac desktop, so I just downloaded and installed it. Before the installation finished, I had to enter my account info (e-mail, password) and so I did. Unfortunately, the Zinio Reader tried to connect but failed, because of my e-mail address seemed not to be existing. I tried it a few times and checked it for typos, but everything was correctly entered.

I decided to write an e-mail to Zinio’s support. I mentioned the problems I’ve been having with the Reader and also the odd, spanish confirmation e-mail I got. Yet (after over one day), they did not answer my mail and I’m wondering whether they’re going to. I’ll just be patient.

However, does anyone know any other sites that provide the same service Zinio does? And maybe allow me to download the stuff I buy as PDF to save it on my Mac?

Regards,
1001 Postcards

http://www.postcards.org/postcards/

… this is what I constantly keep getting by e-mail since the past few weeks. Not that I would not have friends sending my postcards, I just find it interesting that a closer look at the “Click here to pick up your postcard”-link redirects me to the following URL: http://64.34.214.139/~admin2/E-Greetings.exe. Okay, so, now I’m wondering, which of my friends would send me *.exe-files as postcards, through some electronic postcard service. Well, let’s just remove the filename and browse the contents of the ~admin2/-folder in that URL. Oh okay! Now I know! My friends from The Branch Community Church send me electronic postcards in .exe-format! I always knew, the saintly brothers and sisters would think of me.

But okay, let’s cut it here. So as it seems, postcards.org is using (or being used?) spam to deliver .exe-files to low-brow Windows users, which might even click them. I actually did not check, what’s inside that *.exe, but I think it’s clear that it won’t be a postcard. I find it funny, that the web-presence of http://www.thebranchcommunity.com/ is being used for such a crap – talking about credibility.

So, now I’m searching for some way to block this address (maybe report it to SenderBase?) and maybe I’ll also take a closer look at the Host providing the executable.

Just out of curiosity, I’ve downloaded Zarafa’s VMware Demo-Image and ran it on my Fusion, to see how far Zarafa’s Groupware-Suite already is. While clicking through the web-interface and the product’s documentation, I read something about Z-Push – a re-implementation of Microsoft’s ActiveSync. I was wonderning, if it’s already possible to connect my iPod Touch to the Zarafa Groupware by creating a new “Microsoft Exchange” account on the iPod itself.

So, after I’ve reconfigured the Demo VM to speak SSL, I created two different Groupware users and created the account for the first user on my iPod. I only tested the whole product using the E-Mail sync-service – since I did not wanted to lose my existing contacts or calendar entries – and configured “Push” for the new Exchange account. With the credentials of the second user, I logged-in via Zarafa’s (damn ugly) web-interface and wrote an e-mail to the first user, while having my iPod Touch lying on my table, unlocked, in “Home”-screen. The second I clicked the “Send”-button within the browser-window was the second in which a new badge popped up on my iPod, telling me that I have one unread E-Mail.

So actually the whole Zarafa/Exchange/Push stuff seem to work pretty good, though I don’t know yet how reliable it is. I will test this out a bit longer some time, because if it works the way it should, I could really think of using Zarafa on my private E-Mail account. Nor the world’s most advanced operating system‘s E-Mail client neither the iPod support IMAP IDLE yet, what makes it pretty uncomfortable when waiting for new E-Mails.

But eh.

So, after I received a mail from a Headhunter at Microsoft some time ago, I now also got one from an Talent Acquisition at Sun Microsystems. He didn’t wrote me an E-Mail because he found my E-Mail address in some source-codes he looked up on the internet, like Microsoft did. Instead he added me as a Xing contact and entered as reason that Sun is searching for IT Specialist for all kind of software engineering positions. He asked me to add him as contact and to send him my CV.

Okay, so actually this kind of stuff is nice. It makes me glad to see that the work I’m doing in OpenSource really benefits to myself in a way. Though, I don’t really like the way this whole Headhunting thing is being performed. Sometimes I even feel a bit insulted by the texts I receive, because they are all looking pretty much like they would be automatically generated by some tool and sent to me plus one thousand other people. When I receive such a mail I at least expect to know why the guy’s writing me? Where did he got the information about me and what’s his reason for offering me a job possibility? Because the first thing I’m thinking when receiving such mails is “oh crap, spam again…” – it just looks like every other mass-mail, what makes it pretty senseless. I personally would like to know whether I have been getting that mail because I did/have something they are interessted in or just because I “might have a nice CV and knowledge that could be useful to them”. The point is, that I’m not a fan of sending my CV through the whole internet for nothing – if I would want to do that I would apply myself for a job at these companies.

However, I think that these Headhunting people would have more success if they would inform themselves a bit more about their targets and maybe would personalize their request. But still, it’s always fun to read these kind of E-Mails, heh.
